Ideas for improvement

This "figure-review" was written by Cameron Hamilton as part of an assignment for a Biochemistry course at Westfield State University, and posted here by the instructor with permission.

  1. My favorite figure: Figure "Monoglyceride Lipase tunnel". The script is at /wiki/scripts/57/573133/Generic_monomer/3.spt. This figure displays a tunnel at Monoglyceride Lipase's active site.
  2. This is my suggestion for a figure legend: Tunnel at active site containing the Catalytic Triad (Ser132-His279-Asp249).
  3. What I like about the figure: The current figure displays a beautiful 3D rendering of the tunnel, and when turned 20 degrees in both directions, it gives a reader a distinct understanding of the enzyme's structure.
  4. Corresponding figure in the primary citation: None of the primary citations seemed to have figures, however the information about the active site is mostly found at "Labar G, Bauvois C, Borel F, Ferrer JL, Wouters J, Lambert DM. Crystal structure of the human monoacylglycerol lipase, a key actor in endocannabinoid signaling. Chembiochem. 2010 Jan 25;11(2):218-27. PMID:19957260 doi:10.1002/cbic.200900621"
  5. How I think the figure could be improved: The original figure looks great structurally wise. The major problem with it is that it's all the same color and nothing is labeled. It would be much easier on a potential viewer to analyze and understand the figure if there was a way for them to understand what they are looking at. I would suggest using multiple colors for different structures (like the binding site) and labels to indicate important factors.
