Some strains are dependent on sialic acid for binding. EBA-175 is a Plamodium ligand that binds to human erythrocytes glycophorin A in a sialic acid-dependent manner. Duffy receptor is a glycogen receptor for chemicals secreted by blood cells and for Plamodium ligand .
