It is part of the B-ketoadipate pathway in the metabolism of aromatic compounds. MCI breaks down lignin-derived catechol and protocatechuate. Chloromuconate cycloisomerase catalyzes the reversible conversion of 2-carboxy-2,5-dihydro-5-oxofuran-2-acetate to cis,cis-butadiene-1,2,4-tricarboxylate . 3-carboxy-cis,cis-muconate cycloisomerase catalyzes the reversible conversion of 2-carboxy-2,5-dihydro-5-oxofuran-2-acetate to 3-chloro-cis,cis-muconate.
