Acts as a gatekeeper that senses calcium level via its EF-hand domains and sets a threshold for mitochondrial calcium uptake by MCU, thereby preventing mitochondrial calcium overload. Regulates glucose-dependent insulin secretion in pancreatic beta-cells by regulating mitochondrial calcium uptake.
