The recognition and elimination of antigens characterized by the immune system is an integrated response between innate and acquired immunity. Innate immunity is comprised of phagocytic cells, inflammation, complement system, and anatomical barriers such as mucosa, and skin, while acquired immunity is comprised of T and B cells. | The recognition and elimination of antigens characterized by the immune system is an integrated response between innate and acquired immunity. Antibodies are Y – shaped proteins produced by B cells to eliminate antigens upon recognizing and binding to a short and specific amino acid sequence, the epitope, of the respective antigen. The specificity of the antibody-antigen response is marked by the affinity of the antibody towards the antigen while the flexibility of the antibody-antigen response is marked by cross reactivity and the ratio between antigen and antibody. Cross reactivity is a measure of the antibody’s ability to react with multiple antigenic determinants while the ratio between antigen and antibody refers to the respective concentrations of antigen and antibody in the response or complex. | |||
