Chromate is converted to salicylate synthase by MbtI through an intermediate isochromate, bound to an enzyme . During this reaction, a pyruvate molecule is expelled after the intermediate step (Figure 9). Through inhibition studies, mimics of isochromate were made and bound with MbtI.
