| Function
Sorting nexins (SNX) are proteins which enhance membrane association via their lipid-binding PX domain or via protein-protein association[1]. The PX domain contains a phospholipid-binding motif.
- SNX 1 regulates trafficking in the endosome compartment[2].
- SNX 3 regulates neurite formation[3].
- SNX 5 regulates retrograde trafficking of transmembrane cargo receptors[4].
- SNX 7 regulates the survival of cells in embryonic liver[5].
- SNX 9 has a role in endocytosis[6].
- SNX 10 induces giant vacuoles in mammalian cells[7].
- SNX 11and SNX 17 regulate lysosomal degradation of plasma membrane[8].
- SNX 12 regulates BACE1-mediated APP processing [9].
- SNX 14 has a role in maintaining normal neuronal excitability.
- SNX 16 has a role in protein transport from early to late endosomes.
- SNX 22, SNX 24, SNX 25 and SNX 32 may have a role in intracellular trafficking.
- SNX 27 modulates synaptic plasticity[10].
- SNX 33 induces micronucleated phenotype and actin polymerization[11].
Relevance
SNX 2 is a potential marker of hyperfunctioning thyroid disorders[12].
