Human Erythrocyte Catalase is an enzyme whose main function is to break down hydrogen peroxide that is produced as a byproduct of the metabolism <ref name="yazdi">PMID:25739358</ref>(sourcePMID:25739358). They can actually break down up to one million molecules of it per second <ref name="Alfonso-Prietro" />(source PMID:22516655) Without a catalase like this hydrogen peroxide would build up and would do a lot of damage to the cell and could even signal it to initiate cell death <ref name="yazdi" />(sourcePMID:25739358). Structurally it contains four subunits each with a heme group in the center which allows it to break down the peroxide in our cells <ref name="Alfonso-Prietro" /> (source PMID:22516655). | |||
