Introduction
Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) is an enzyme, encoded in the MAOA gene on the X chromosome, that is expressed on the outer surface of the mitochondrial membrane. Two isoforms of this enzyme are expressed in the same region, MAO-A and MAO-B, and both are responsible for the oxidation of various amine-containing neurotransmitters and dietary amines. More specifically, MAO-A oxidizes serotonin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine; while MAO-B oxidizes phenylethylamine and benzylamine. Both isoforms of monoamine oxidase oxidize dopamine, tyramine, and N,N-dimethyltryptamine.
