Assembles into proteinaceous shells 23-24 nm in diameter with 2-2.5 nm thick walls. Endogenous cargo protein DyP (dye-decolorizing peroxidase) is targeted to the interior via its C-terminal extension; only 1 DyP hexamer is incorporated into each shell. Empty shells can be isolated in the absence of cargo (PubMed:19172747, PubMed:27355101, PubMed:29166561). Cargo encapsulation probably precedes assembly of the nanocompartment; may assemble or disassemble via dimers, subcomplexes with a distinct preference for even numbers of subunits are detected (Probable) (PubMed:27355101). Nanocompartments are stable against mechanical forces; loaded nanocompartments are less stable than empty ones (PubMed:27355101). Nanocompartments are stable between pH 5-10; they aggregate at pH 9-10 and start to disassemble at pH 11. They are stable in 1M NaCl, 1 M MgCl(2) and 1M CaCl(2), unstable in 20% DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) and are stable in 20% but not 40% ethanol (PubMed:29166561).
