Over 20 BMPs are known at present. BMP is part of the Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β) family of proteins. BMP-1 cleaves the C-propeptides of type I pro collagen during the synthesis of extracellular collagen fibrils. BMP-2 has important role in embryogenesis, bone formation and homeostasis. BMP-3 is a major component in osteogenin. BMP-6 is essential for expression of hepcidin which controls iron homeostasis.
