DNA repair is necessary to maintain genome fidelity. Errors in DNA can arise from many different sources. Errors introduced in the replication process are the simplest source. This leads to non-Watson-Crick base pairs and local distortions in the helix. Bases can also be damaged by oxidizing agents, alkylating agents or UV light.
