Function
Synaptosomal-associated protein (SNAP) and in particular SNAP25 is localized on the synapse and participates in exocytosis and neurotransmitter release[1]. SNAP25, Syntaxin 1a and VAMP (Vesicle-associated membrane protein) form the stable soluble SNARE complex and their interaction is involved in the release of synaptic vesicles.
Disease
Mutation in SNAP25 induces a severe working memory deficit and some common adulthood psychiatric disorders[2].
Relevance
Decreased expression of SNAP25 is associated with Alzheimer's disease, Down syndrome and ADHD disorder[3].
Structural highlights
SNAP25 has two SNARE motifs - one at its N-terminal and the other at its C-terminal. These motives make complexes with Syntaxin and VAMP2[4].
