In the physical model, the nucleic acid is blue and the protein is red. The protein's job is to bind to any double-stranded RNA of a certain size, irrespective of sequence. There are two ways it accomplishes this. First, it has an electrostatic interaction with the negatively charged phosphate backbone. Second, two exposed tryptophan side chains stack with the outer base pairs of the nucleic acid, effectively measuring its length and selecting for dsRNA with 19 stacked base pairs.
