FunctionHEMA_INBYB Binds to sialic acid-containing receptors on the cell surface, bringing about the attachment of the virus particle to the cell. Plays a major role in the determination of host range restriction and virulence. Class I viral fusion protein. Responsible for penetration of the virus into the cell cytoplasm by mediating the fusion of the membrane of the endocytosed virus particle with the endosomal membrane. Low pH in endosomes induce an irreversible conformational change in HA2, releasing the fusion hydrophobic peptide. Several trimers are required to form a competent fusion pore. Publication Abstract from PubMedWe describe cross-reactive human antibodies recognizing influenza B viruses spanning nearly 80 years of antigenic drift. Structures show that they engage the receptor-binding site (RBS) of the viral hemagglutinin with strong similarities to their influenza A counterparts, despite structural differences between the RBS of influenza A and B. Our data show that these antibodies readily cross-react with both influenza B Victoria and Yamagata lineages. We also note that all antibodies are encoded by IGHV3-9/IGK1-33. Future research will provide insight into the prevalence of these antibodies in the human population.
