Karl E. Zahn is currently a graduate student in Sylvie DoubliƩ's lab at the University of Vermont. Much of his work employs the family B DNA polymerase from bacteriophage RB69. Due both to the capacity of RB69 polymerase to form diffraction quality crystals in complex with DNA, and its extensive homology shared with human replicative DNA polymerases, Karl is able apply methods in structural biology to model DNA synthesis opposite oxidized DNA templates as it occurs in dividing human cells. This process is interesting because oxidized DNA templates elevate the probability for mutation, which can initiate oncogenesis. Karl's interests extend into the fields of chromatin structure and epigenetics.
